Last week saw the official opening of the newly expanded Tirana International Airport. With 300 guests there to celebrate at a gala ceremony, guest speakers acknowledged the huge efforts which have gone into making the airport what it is today.
The work of the Albanian-American Enterprise Fund, DEG Deutsche Investitions und Entwicklunggesellschaft and Hochtief Airport started two years ago creating one of the most efficient airports in the Balkans. Speaking on the work, Dr. Peter Noe, a member of the Board at Hochtief AG said, ”For me, this is far more than just a conventional ceremony to mark the opening of a new building. In my eyes, the enlarged terminal symbolizes the success of a strong partnership – a partnership which only came into being in 2005.
That was when Albanian-American Enterprise Fund, DEG Deutsche Investitions und Entwicklunggesellschaft and Hochtief Airport teamed up to take on an ambitious goal on behalf of the Albanian state. We founded the Tirana International Airport company to make this airport into one of the most successful and efficient facilities of its kind in this entire region.”
The expansion is the result of over EUR 20 million, this is in addition to the original cost of the airport and goes to show just how seriously investors are taking Albania as its economy grows. The latest investment will enable Tirana International Airport to accomodate an additional 1.5 – 1.8 million passengers each year.
This comes shortly after Albania’s National Tourism Agency say there has been a significant increase in visitor numbers in 2009.
